Genotype

We can’t help but tell that the world is full of hypocrisy. It’s easy to blame our parents because of their ignorance about certain decisions. This is our thought: if you were in their shoes, would you have made the same decision or something better?

We agree we see some things more than them. However, we ignore some facts because of emotions, doctrine, and other factors.

We say love conquers all. Well, is this an accurate statement? Of course!

However, should we put our lives and future generation in danger just because of our negligence? I perceive you are all thinking, why the whole displeasure? You will get to know about this issue.

Have you ever thought of why there is a high rate of sickle cell in the world? It saddens our souls when we see people who don’t care about their genotype. Yes, it’s about genotype! Trust me: this topic is as important as the food you eat. Now let’s dive into this.

When we talk about it, what are we implying? Genotype is the generic arrangement of an organism regarding the set of traits, either single or an entire complex trait. Therefore, the genotype made us a complete heritable genetic identity.

In a nutshell, your genotype, which is passed down from your parents, has a significant impact on your health.

Another fact is that the type of protein in red blood cells is determined by your blood genotype. Thus, depending on what you receive from your parents, you might have hemoglobin levels of AA, AS, AC, SS, or SC.

These are the classes of genotypes that we have. As stated earlier, sickle cell disease affects people with the blood genotypes SC and SS, while I think sickle cell trait to affect people with AS.

Therefore, people with this type of genotype are liable to

Do we think it’s important to know our genotype?

There is excitement that comes with knowing your unique feature and psychological trait. Also, the world is full of unexpected events happening around us.

Thus, when casualties that we can avoid happen, it’s unpleasant to hear. For example, the rate at which children die because of sickle cell is alarming. This is something we can avoid.

Thus, knowing your genotype helps to determine eligibility for a clinical trait such as carrier status and drugs to use. Plus, the major goal of knowing your genotype is to stop sickle cell disease from spreading.

For example, red blood cells with sickle shapes show sickle cell disease. Therefore, the cells develop a state where they carry less oxygen and obstruct the normal flow of the body to other body areas.

In Nigeria, the prevalence of sickle cell trait is around 25% and as long as two people with the trait get married, the burden of sickle cell illness will rise. This doesn’t sound interesting, right? Then what are you waiting for?

You can test for your genotype through a certified hospital. Nevertheless, another way to know your genotype without going to the hospital is by splitting into a test tube and sending it to the laboratory for analysis.

So, do we think it’s immportant to know our genotype? Of course, yes!

Just because of the necessity of this topic, we would love to hear how the negligence of genotype has broken some relationships and even marriages. Give your story in the comment session.
